What a carve up!

This is a book cover design for the 2014 Penguin design awards.

Although much of the narrative follows the ruthless and ambitious Winshaw family, what I found was most important was their effect on the world around them. I chose to represent the family gatherings where many pivatol events take place using a dining table. The flag table cloth is an indication of the way the Winshaws have carved up and feasted on the country’s resources. The plates also give a subtle clue as to their fates which I didn’t want to spoil for the reader. As the book focuses on two groups of people, I wanted the front and back cover to connect and show the two different worlds that the characters live in. The ‘carved up’ British flag has been rearranged into a window into show Michael’s world, the Britain that the Winshaws have created.
