BETTER LUCK TOMORROW
BFI SCREENING + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR JUSTIN LIN

Client   MilkTea Films

An illustration comissioned by MilkTea Films to celebrate the first UK theatrical screening and 20th anniversary  release of Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow (2002) at the BFI Southbank.

Since the film showcased Asian characters I really wanted to make them the focus of the final illustration. The series of decisions and spiraling consquences of the characters actions was also an anchor point for the final design. The background utilises a swirling effect that echos a camera technique often used in the film, especially in the most climactic scene,  It also means the illustration can be used in any orientation. The overall composition is a very subtle nod to the film's climax, as the lightsource in the background is quite ambigious, it could be the in the sky or perhaps a light fixture on the ceiling.

The final illustration was included in printed booklet to accompany the event , it folds out into an A2 poster.
